Same World, Different Stories: Happy Migrants Day

The United Nations International Migrants Day is annually held on December 18 to recognize the efforts, contributions, and rights of migrants worldwide.

Here’s a List of individuals who have contributed immensely to the success of American innovation:


Elon Musk – C
EO of SpaceX and Tesla Motors, Zip2 and founder of PayPal

Musk grew up in Pretoria, South Africa, and moved to Canada in 1988 so that it would be easier to emigrate to the U.S. He became a naturalized American citizen in 2002.


Sergey Brin – Co-Founder of Google


Born in the Soviet Union, Sergey Brin grew up in a very intellectual Russian Jewish family. When Brin’s family decided to move to the United States, they couldn’t imagine that he’d become the 13th reachest person in the world.

 

Levi Strauss – Creator of Levis Jeans


Levi Strauss, a German migrant in America, was the man who in 1873  founded the first company to ever sell blue jeans, Levi’s! You’ve definitely seen that iconic red and white logo known as the Batwing.

Oscar de la Renta – Fashion designer

De la Renta was born in the Dominican Republic. His willingness to work with ready-to-wear brought him to the US. Dressing everyone from Jackie Kennedy to Hillary Clinton, Penelope Cruz to Taylor Swift, Oscar de la Renta founded his own eponymous fashion house.


Jan Koum – Co-founder of WhatsApp


The WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum was born in Ukraine. He arrived in the U.S. when he was only 16 years old. At that time his family lived on food stamps.


Indra Nooyi – CEO of PepsiCo

Born in Madras, India, the future CEO of PepsiCo grew up conservative and middle-class, studying physics, chemistry, and math. Her determination to study in the U.S. brought her to Yale University’s Graduate School of Management in 1978.


Steve Chen  & Jawed Karim – Co-founders of Youtube

These are the guys that co-founded Youtube! Karim was the first person to upload a video to YouTube. It was 19 seconds and called “Me at the zoo.” It’s not all that interesting, but now it has over 44 million views.


Mary Anne MacLeod

Born in Scotland, Mary Anne MacLeod in 1929 made her way to The US when she was just 18 years old. She is the mother of president Trump, and despite his strong stance on immigration, the current president of the United States ironically happens to be a child of an immigrant.
