Interesting to know:
Receiving a red envelope on New Year’s Day is definitely one of the happiest moments of the Spring Festival. But what is behind this tradition? What is the origin of Red Envelopes?
According to a legend, there was an evil spirit named Sui, who came out every year on New Year’s Eve to terrify children while they were asleep. It was believed that the kids who were touched by Sui would be excessively frightened to cry out loud, they would get awful fever and even become mentally unstable. Once in one family, parents gave their son 8 coins to keep him awake and entertained, so Sui could not harm him. The kid was so exhausted and he eventually put the coins into a red envelope and hid it under his pillow and fell asleep. When the evil spirit came to scare him, the coins emitted a strong light and frightened Sui away. Following their example, the entire village started doing the same and from then on, it became a tradition. Nowadays, gifting a red envelope became a way to share your blessings and wish others good luck.
